Automated tracking of football matches

There is a lot of money and interest in football. It is therefore highly important for football teams to pick the most suitable players. Now they have to do that based on a pure observation, but researchers from the UT and SciSports are working on developing a fully automated software for tracking football players and the ball. So far their efforts are paying off.

Profclubs doen veel moeite de beste voetballers te scouten. Tot nu toe doen ze dat op grond van menselijke waarnemingen, maar onderzoekers van de UT en start-up SciSports werken aan software die de taak van de scout automatiseert.

Statistiek en intuïtie gaat dat samen?

‘Ik liep stage bij FC Twente en ik dacht: dat kan beter.’ Zo opende oud-UT-student Giels Brouwer zijn verhaal gisteren tijdens Studium Generale in de Vrijhof. Samen met oud-voetballer en huidig scout Alfred Nijhuis, sprak hij over scouting, statistieken en intuïtie.
