VR goggles allow sick children to play outside

‘I see a slide, I want to go there!’

Two UT alumni and a student of Creative Technology developed a virtual playground for sick children. The virtual-reality goggles are used for the first time at the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital in Utrecht. ‘The children believe they are in a completely different world.’

‘As scientists, we are too divorced from our societies’

‘I hope this will be interesting enough for you, because I have a rather unusual story.’ She does indeed. Connie Nshemereirwe (45) is a scientist through and through, but this UT alumna is not following the traditional path of a researcher. She has stepped out of academia in order to have more impact on society. Now, self-employed and independent, the Ugandan actively creates a bridge between science and policy - as a trainer, writer, speaker and as the co-chair of the Global Young Academy.

Four months of complete darkness and a high risk of being attacked by a polar bear. Those are just some of the dangers ITC alumnus Vishnu Nandan will be facing soon. This Friday, the researcher is embarking on the largest polar expedition in history.

Is Mount Everest shrinking or growing? We will soon have the answer. ITC alumnus Susheel Dangol is leading a team of 80 people, all dedicated to perform ‘the most accurate measurement’ of the highest mountain on the planet. ‘It is a matter of national pride.’

‘It is my mission to create a place for failures’

Paul Iske (1961) obtained his cum laude doctoral degree in Applied Physics from the UT, but these days his business card reads ‘Chief Failure Officer’. His Institute of Brilliant Failures advocates for room to experiment and fail, as long as you do it right and learn from it.

Virtual playground for children in hospitals

PlaygroundVR is a virtual reality playing area designed for children in hospitals. Among its makers are two UT alumni and a current student of Creative Technology. ‘After using it, one child in a wheelchair actually told us “it felt like I was not in a wheelchair for a moment”. That was really cool.’

Het belang van nieuwsgierigheid en verbeelding

Cees Links, uitvinder van de wifi en UT-alumnus, is maandag hoofdspreker tijdens de opening van het academisch jaar. Hij heeft nog wel een paar tips voor de UT. ‘Nieuwsgierigheid en verbeeldingskracht genoeg op de UT, maar de echte wereld vraagt om meer.’

Marina van Damme Scholarship for physician Joeke Nollet

Joeke Nollet was selected as this year’s winner of the Marina van Damme scholarship. The UT alumna works as a medical doctor and will use the € 9,000 cash prize to study a new technique for diagnosing swallowing disorders. Nollet accepted the award during the UT Entrepreneurial Day ceremony in De Waaier today.

‘If you focus on results, mountains will move’

‘My motivation? The privilege of working in this office. The knowledge that anybody can contribute to a better world. If you focus on results, mountains will move. I used to walk sixteen kilometers to school every day and now I’m a minister.’ Those are the words of Professor Amon Murwira, an ITC alumnus and the Zimbabwean Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology Development.

Like father, like son(s)

Before moving to the US for thirty years, Ed Jonker studied Applied Mathematics at the UT. Now the alumnus is back in Enschede and, while still telecommuting to his job near New York, he is considering to return to his alma mater – as a student. If that happens, he would be a classmate of his two sons, who have both chosen to study at the University of Twente.

Maandelijks komt een harde kern van UT-alumni sinds een jaar samen in café België op de Oude Markt. Ze zagen na hun afstuderen veel studievrienden vertrekken naar het Westen. Op de borrel ontmoeten ze elkaar.
