Language for the body and soul

UT researchers who are currently learning Dutch at the TCP Language Centre are in for two rather unusual Dutch lessons next week. Rather than being held in a classroom, their evening classes on Monday or Tuesday will be held at the UT Sports Center. Thursday and Friday's lessons will take place in the Vrijhof Cultural Center. The reasons for this change in location are two-fold.

Ceremony international students

On Friday October the 18th, a remarkable event took place. The international office of University of Twente organized a ceremony for international scholarship students. The ceremony was held in the exquisite VIP Arke lounge of the Grolsch Veste in Enschede. More than one hundred scholarship students were present, side to side with academic and administrative personnel from the University.

Accommodation scam

Daniel Monteiro is a 23 year-old student from Brazil. He studies Energy Engineering in University of Twente. Like every other student, he had his own quest searching for accommodation. Through the alternative housing handbook by the international housing office, he knew about the Student Union-Kamersite. This is where he found ads for available rooms in Enschede. In the ads list, he saw an appealing offer for a room in a detached house. The location was perfect; half way between the campus and the city center. Daniel then contacted the alleged owner named “Spencer Franc” via email.

Try to google ‘universities ranking’ and the results will show you hundreds of websites and lists claiming to have the only reliable or credible world universities ranking. In fact no one pays any attention or concern to these lists. There exist however very few lists that are relatively regardful and reliable.

Last year, fifty international students got a taste of Dutch hospitality at Dine with the Dutch. This year, a cooperation of four Christian student associations will provide free meals to co-students from other countries. The aim: to get to know each other’s culture better.
