‘De Vestingbar mag nooit verdwijnen’

De jubilerende Vestingbar is al vijftig jaar een begrip op de campus. Vier (oud)leden vertellen over bierrecords en nachtelijke zwempartijen. Kleurrijke verhalen uit de oude doos. Ook blikken ze vooruit. ‘De enorme studiedruk van tegenwoordig is niet bevorderlijk voor de Vestingbar.’

‘Jezelf zijn is het belangrijkste’

Femke Nijboer (40), universitair docent Biomedical Signals and Systems, promoveerde magna cum laude en won in 2011 een VENI-subsidie. Maar ze breekt het liefst uit de muren van de universiteit. Daar maakt ze sinds een jaar werk van. ‘Na zeven magere jaren is het tijd voor de vette.’

Now the Assistant Professor at the University of Twente researches effective interview techniques for intelligence gathering. He uncovers the principles behind ‘master interrogation’, developing training for the police and military.

Using talent and excitement to solve clinical problems

After a careless childhood and strict education, the lab is where UT Professor of Multi-Modality Medical Imaging Srirang Manohar (49) found the right chemistry and fell in love with science. It sparked the choice for a Master-PhD degree in the hustle and bustle of the Indian megacity of Bangalore. Which brought him to the relative serenity of Twente, where he is now working on a ‘beyond state-of-the-art’ breast cancer diagnosis machine.

‘I learnt how to be a man here’

The father of UT student Mohamad Mahayri (28) owned a chocolate factory. ‘Oh yes, I could eat all the chocolate I wanted. But the factory was near Aleppo and it was destroyed in the war.’ So was Mahayri’s university, which was shot down during an air strike. Shortly after, he decided to come to the Netherlands, and a few weeks ago he obtained his bachelor's degree in International Business Administration at the UT.

Een laatste ‘groetje’ van Hans Vossensteyn

De campus was 34 jaar lang het ‘thuis’ van hoogleraar Hans Vossensteyn. Eerst als student bestuurskunde, sinds 1991 als onderzoeker en later als directeur bij de CHEPS-vakgroep. Daar komt nu een einde aan. Na de zomervakantie verhuist de hoogleraar naar de Saxion hogeschool, om directeur te worden van de Research & Graduate School.

Professor Bojana Rosic (36) is the first scientist to be appointed for the female-only Hypatia chair at the UT. ‘I was a bit reluctant to apply, but I decided to take the position as a challenge. I want to encourage girls to study engineering,’ says the Professor of Applied Mechanics and Data Analysis at the ET Faculty.

Jennifer Herek succeeded Hans Hilgenkamp as dean of the faculty of Science & Technology (TNW) about six months ago. After a period of different roles within the UT, she enjoys the full attention that she can give the faculty. ‘We are in good shape, I can concentrate on making connections, letting colleagues shine and looking for cooperation within and outside the faculty.’

Jennifer Herek volgde een klein half jaar geleden Hans Hilgenkamp op als decaan bij de faculteit Technische Natuurwetenschappen. Ze geniet na een periode van verschillende rollen binnen de UT van de volle aandacht die ze de faculteit kan geven. ‘We staan er goed voor, ik kan me concentreren op verbindingen leggen, collega’s laten stralen en samenwerking zoeken binnen en buiten de faculteit.’

‘Scheikunde is een hechte gemeenschap’

Opleidingsdirecteur Ben Betlem neemt vandaag – wegens het behalen van de pensioengerechtigde leeftijd – officieel afscheid van de UT. Dat doet hij met de lezing ‘Een halve eeuw UT-onderwijs in Chemical Engineering’. Treffender is misschien wel de ondertitel: lessen voor de toekomst. Want ondanks zijn pensioen, ambitieuze toekomstplannen voor Chemical Engineering heeft Betlem nog genoeg.

‘Iets missen als thuiswonende student? Absoluut niet!’

Geen basisbeurs, wel stijgende collegegelden en burn-outklachten. Studeren is geen luizenleven en steeds meer studenten blijven daarom thuis wonen bij pa en ma. Twee thuisblijvers en één uitvlieger vertellen aan de keukentafel over hun ervaringen. ‘Op kamers gaan lijkt misschien leuk, maar na een paar maanden begint de ellende.’
