‘Writing about things that kept me busy’

| Marc Pichel

Dear international, multilingual, busy, bored, intelligent, funny, nerdy and wandering student. If you are someone who wonders a lot about life, its meaning and how to face it after studying, then this might be a column for you.

My name is Marc Pichel, a biomedical engineering graduate of the University of Twente who likes spending his time observing people in the city as they go shopping, while I imagine what that would look like in 50 years. Mostly because I wonder about what could go wrong if values and morals are daily, dictated by media instead of ourselves. Consequently, I think about how I could maybe alleviate that in theory with my limited skill set.

Passion

In everyday life I am an employee of the University of Twente, working as a PhD student in KIST Europe, Germany. Traveling and building up a new life have been my bread and butter since my youth, but my passion lies in philosophizing and writing about the things that kept me busy as a student of life for the last 32 years and most likely will keep doing so until I die.

Writing

These passions have lead me to the start of writing creatively. Something I really hated in high school, because I was always the worst in class when it came to languages, spelling and grammar in general. There was no motivation to learn, but now I must if I want to output my thoughts and convey a message which cannot easily be misinterpreted. A challenge that can only be taken up if all time is dedicated to learning this craft of putting thoughts into words.

Notebook

It started with a little notebook I bought a year ago. Not one of those digital ones with a battery and limited use in the sun, but a pen and a small, paper-style booklet. I carry it everywhere in my pocket just in case I see something funny, interesting or strange that might come in handy for writing later. A booklet that has since been merged with a smartphone, a whiteboard and a laptop. Most of the practice with writing I get from blogging - for more weird thoughts see this link. The rest of my free time dedicated to this passion goes into writing science fiction. A trilogy that might be the beginning of a new career or the end of a huge effort in futility. Time will tell.

Cabaret

Aside from the focus on literature (if you can call it that) I work on ideas for a cabaret show that relies heavily on criticizing or addressing political and societal issues. Other ways of writing go into posting comments online; responding to and debating with communities that let me hone my critical thinking ability. A crucial asset for any academic or writer.

These all form a continuum in which I blend my thoughts, which subsequently converge into a cocktail of science fiction, poetry and philosophy over the course of time. Courtesy of my little notebook and pen.
