Het ziet er in theorie best florissant uit, in 2015. In ruil voor een uitgeholde basisbeurs komt er een ‘sociaal’ leenstelsel. Studenten kunnen naar behoefte geld lenen, en betalen dat later naar draagkracht terug. Er komt een berg geld vrij voor beter onderwijs, en studenten kunnen meepraten hoe dat onderwijs eruit gaat zien.

In search of millions, buried between promises and practices

Together with other higher education media outlets, we are looking into what has become of the promises that were made when the basic student grant was abolished in a series of investigative stories. In theory, things looked pretty good back in 2015. In exchange for a hollowed-out basic student grant, a 'social' loan system would be put in its place. Students could borrow money as needed, and pay it back later depending on their financial means. A lot of money would be freed up for better education, and students would get to have their say in what that education would look like.

‘Ik geloof niet in traditioneel hotelletje spelen’

Sylvester Ponsen (47) is sinds 1 januari de nieuwe directeur van het U Parkhotel. Een start in crisistijd, bemoeilijkt door een brand in de keuken van het hotel eind december. Een valse start? Absoluut niet, vindt Ponsen. ‘Dit is de beste introductie die ik kon hebben.’

En hoe vond je het, studeren aan de UT?

Aan de UT studeren meer dan tachtig verschillende nationaliteiten. Die smeltkroes op de campus levert talrijke verhalen, tegenstellingen en connecties op. Hoe kijken drie internationals, die op punt van afstuderen staan, terug op hun periode in Nederland?

‘The world has not seen the last of me yet’

Nasty remarks shouted at you every day; sometimes even being chased and backed into a corner. Myrthe van der Houwen, a student of Psychology at the UT, was completely fed up with everything women had to deal with at the Noorderhagen in Enschede. In early June, she launched a petition against sexual harassment on the street. Seventeen thousand signatures and countless media appearances later, she looks back on the whole ordeal.

Elke keer die schunnige opmerkingen naar je hoofd; soms zelfs achtervolgd en klemgezet worden. UT-studente Psychologie Myrthe van der Houwen was he-le-maal klaar met wat vrouwen op de Noorderhagen te verduren kregen. Begin juni startte ze een petitie tegen seksuele intimidatie op straat. Zeventienduizend handtekeningen en talloze media-optredens later blikt ze terug.

‘Aandacht is de essentie van ons vak’

Na ruim dertig jaar neemt Marijke Schmand, directeur van het U Parkhotel, afscheid van het hotelwezen op de campus. Met pijn in het hart, zeker tijdens deze tweede lockdown. Maar ook met trots. ‘Het is gelukt om de ziel van de Drienerburght mee te nemen naar het U Parkhotel.’

‘I’m a woman, I’m brown, I’m often the minority,’ says Sterre Mkatini, the new Diversity & Inclusion Officer at the UT. ‘But’, she adds, she is not here to be a poster child for diversity.’ I’m here to work on a more diverse and inclusive environment for everyone.’
