‘Alleen koplopers overleven’

Als ‘jongste bediende’ kwam hij in 1978 naar de UT, waar hij zich als universitair docent bezig hield met computertoepassingen in de productietechniek. Vrijdag neemt hoogleraar design engineering, Fred van Houten, officieel afscheid van de UT. Zijn laatste kunstje: hij haalde Fraunhofer naar de campus. ‘Dat zegt iets over onze kwaliteit’.

‘Ik stop als ik mezelf ga herhalen’

Jaarlijks nemen heel wat pensioengerechtigden afscheid van de UT, om te gaan genieten van een welverdiende oude dag. Onder hen zijn er ook veel die het strijdtoneel nooit helemaal verlaten. Ze blijven actief op allerlei terreinen en in allerlei uithoeken van de campus. ‘Laat de strakke regie op de OER los’

Het Twents Onderwijsmodel (TOM) is drie jaar na de invoering volwassen en robuust. Dat zegt gepensioneerd UT-hoogleraar Ton Mouthaan. Hij werd begin dit jaar als verkenner aangesteld om het hoog opgelopen conflict tussen de Uraad en het College van Bestuur glad te strijken. ‘TOM is stevig verankerd, het is tijd om de strakke centrale regie los te laten.’

‘My main job is being a vascular surgeon. The base of my work at the UT is to translate advanced technologies to diagnosis and treatment of patients. ‘Computer is more patient than parents’

‘If it comes to young children using digital media, people often think of negative effects, but that is not necessarily accurate. The right apps could even help children learn how to read. After all, computers are more patient than parents and they allow for easy repetition,’ says Eliane Segers, a newly appointed professor of ‘Reading and Digital Media’ at the UT.

UT alumna’s work for the military

In 2010, Miriam de Graaff joined the Dutch army’s mission in Afghanistan. Not to carry a gun, but to carry out a PhD research. She wanted to study the daily life experiences of servicemen and women and to see what ethical challenges soldiers of all ranks have to deal with. She managed to define these moral dilemmas and her thesis is now being used by the highest Dutch military officers.

What it means to be a father

‘After I separated from my wife and became a single father, I wanted to be very involved with my daughter, but I found that the society wasn’t comfortable with me in this role. Based on that, my PhD work shifted towards understanding this experience, why is it challenging for men to play the nurturing role with their kids and what it means to be a father,’ says Jeff St. John, who recently received his PhD degree at the UT.

Op dinsdag 2 februari ontvingen we het bericht dat onze collega Sjoerd van Tongeren, zakelijk directeur van het onderzoeksinstituut IGS, was overleden. Zijn overlijden kwam geheel onverwacht. Hij is 50 jaar oud geworden.
