Even in a world of social media it's still not always easy for doctoral candidates to effectively place themselves and their research into the limelight. Often they do not succeed in convincing the outside world of the importance of their research, which means that many scientific results do not receive the attention they deserve. Furthermore, because of this the talents that could lead to, for example, solutions in the business sector, in medical issues or social problems are insufficiently utilized.
In order to help doctoral candidates optimally distinguish themselves and their research both in and outside the academic world P-NUT, the doctoral candidates association of the UT, dedicates their yearly PhD Day to the theme 'visibility'. The day is held on Thursday 16 October in the Atrium of the Vrijhof. With 'Be Visible' as leading motto, experts will provide the participants with handholds for generating attention for their research, for instance in learning how to effectively network at conferences, increasing online visibility or presenting a strong personal brand.
In the morning Dr Elze Ufkes and Dr Loes Segerink will hold a lecture on 'online presence' and 'interaction with the media', and there will be presentations by Joe Laufer on the alumni network and by Janinka Feenstra on the Kennispark Twente. After lunch and a visit to the information fair, attendees can participate in a workshop on networking at conferences and a workshop on printing the thesis and spreading knowledge.
The PhD Day lasts from 10:00 until 17:30 and is accessible for free for P-NUT members. (Non-members can register on the spot and will pay a yearly contribution of 12 euros.) Starting 19:00 there will be a collective dinner (costs: 5 euro) and directly after we will hold a pub quiz. Registering for one or more scheduled activities is possible.
