Detecting hidden hunger from space – and on campus

UT researcher Mariana Belgiu aims to expose ‘hidden hunger’, a form of malnutrition that impacts two billion people worldwide. Although she is using satellite data to map this global challenge, her research also takes place close to home. This autumn, Belgiu’s team will start a ten year long field test directly on campus.

Volcanic eruption in Iceland: ‘A constant worry’

Iceland is experiencing another volcanic eruption this week. Heather Handley, a volcanologist working at the ITC faculty of the University of Twente, comments on the recent event and on possible ways to mitigate volcanic risks. ‘The danger of further volcanic activity in the area is very high.’

Esteemed visit at official opening Langezijds

Outgoing minister Liesje Schreinemacher officially opened the new home of the ITC faculty on Wednesday afternoon. The ambassadors of Pakistan, Indonesia, Ghana and Tanzania were also present at Langezijds, which unofficially opened before the summer.

UT master's thesis leads to prestigious publication

ITC alumnus Zijing Wu located wildebeest and zebras in the Serengeti

Deep learning enables satellite-based monitoring of large populations of terrestrial mammals across heterogeneous landscape. Under that title, the master's thesis of now former ITC student Zijing Wu (26) was published in the scientific journal Nature Communications. Wu was even the first author. Something she never reckoned with.

New UAV Centre to bring drone researchers together

The ITC faculty recently opened a new 'UAV Centre', focused on drone technology. The centre aims to combine the efforts of UT researchers, to improve the quality of UAV research and education. ‘Collaborating is more beneficial in UAV technology than in other fields’, says Francesco Nex, the centre's coordinator.
