2000: Doe Maar maakt rentree op de campus

In ‘Terug naar het jaar…’ laten we vervlogen campustijden herleven aan de hand van opmerkelijke verhalen. In deze twintigste aflevering gaan we terug naar het jaar 2000, toen de Nederlandse band Doe Maar haar rentree maakte in de Vrijhof.

‘We hebben veel te veel vertrouwen in de wetenschap’

In een goedbezochte Agora opende Rosanne Hertzberger maandag tijdens de lunch de Week of Inspiration. De microbioloog en schrijver, vooral bekend van haar column in NRC, liet de aanwezigen nadenken over de vraag of het terecht is dat het Nederlandse vertrouwen in de wetenschap zo hoog is.

‘Ik mis de studenten, de artiesten en de reuring in de Vrijhof’

Voor veel UT’ers ontwaakte de wereld begin 2022, toen we en masse uit de coronaperiode stapten. Voor Tineke Grootenboer (55), coördinator podiumkunst Cultuur, voelt het nog steeds 2020. Bij haar is begin dit jaar kanker geconstateerd. Ze ziet de campus maar sporadisch en vreest dat het einde van haar UT-tijd na ruim 25 jaar in zicht komt. ‘Normaal vlieg ik door die zaal om alles te regelen, nu zit ik daar in mijn rolstoel.’

‘I miss the students, the artists and the commotion in the Vrijhof’

For many members of the UT community, the world awoke back in 2022, when we returned from a period dominated by corona at a high pace. For Tineke Grootenboer (55), coordinator performing arts Culture, it still feels like 2020. At the start of this year, she was diagnosed with cancer. Now, she only visits the campus sporadically and fears that the end of her UT tenure is inching closer after more than 25 years. ‘Normally I fly down that hall to arrange everything, now I’m simply sitting here in my wheelchair.’

Inbraak in meerdere kantoren Vrijhof

In enkele kantoren in de Vrijhof is afgelopen weekend ingebroken. Vooralsnog lijkt het er op dat er geen buit is gemaakt, maar de inbraak roept veel vraagtekens op.

Burglary in several Vrijhof offices

Several offices in the Vrijhof building were broken into last weekend. For the time being, it seems that nothing has been stolen, but the burglary raises many question marks.

International Women’s Day 2022

Blank canvas

In honour of the International Women’s Day 2022 on 8 March, Vrijhof Culture organized a get-together dedicated to ‘breaking the bias’. Participants literally started with a blank canvas, jointly filling it up with one work of art celebrating women. The event also served as an occasion to reopen an exhibit of ‘Women in Mathematics’ and ‘forgotten’ female inventors in Vrijhof on campus.

Apollo Winter Fair: hot chocolate, felt penguins and friendly conversation

Just before the latest lockdown, Cultural Umbrella Association Apollo held its Winter Fair, an event open to all students and employees. Slated to include Christmas films, dance, and craft workshops, the Winter Fair was a break from the stress of study and everyday life.

Culture events on campus will have limited capacity

With the beginning of the academic year, cultural events on campus are restarting as well. Covid-19 tests or proof of vaccination won’t be necessary in order to attend, but capacity will be reduced. Maximum of 60 visitors will be allowed per event in Vrijhof.

Marijke Broekhuis werkte 45 jaar op de UT

‘De coronacrisis is geen smet op mijn carrière’

In 1976 solliciteerde de toen 20-jarige Marijke Broekhuis voor een bibliotheekfunctie in De Vrijhof. Vandaag zwaait ze op diezelfde plek af na 45 jaar. Een monoloog in negen thema’s.

Eindelijk weer voorstellingen in Vrijhof

Na maanden van stilte was er eindelijk weer rumoer in het Amphitheater van de Vrijhof. Gisteren vond de allereerste try-out van het Groninger Studenten Cabaret Festival plaats. In een – voor coronabegrippen – bomvolle zaal met 25 man publiek lieten de vier overgebleven kandidaten zien waarom zij het verdienen in de halve finale te staan.

Nieuw cultureel seizoen

‘Avondje uit is anders, maar gevoel blijft’

Met een nieuw collegejaar, start ook weer een nieuw cultureel seizoen. Met dit najaar veel aandacht voor de Amerikaanse verkiezingen. Uiteraard zal alles kleinschalig van opzet zijn én coronaproof.

Expositie Vrijhof

‘Ik denk dat dit studenten raakt’

De Duitse kunstenares Madeleine Christin Leroy laat vanaf deze week haar tentoonstelling Armada zien, in de expositieruimte van de Vrijhof. ‘Ik denk dat het de studenten raakt. Niet alleen door de kleur en de vormen, maar ook doordat het er enigszins komisch uitziet.’

Speed-dating at the Theatercafé

‘Something else than Tinder’

Even though Valentine’s Day is still far away, that didn’t keep the Theatercafé team from organising their first speed-dating event. Already fifty students have signed up for the now sold-out event, which takes place on December 11th.
