The 5-step Cog Manual

| Marc Pichel

Fitting in is something we all crave or craved at some point, at the cost of money for time. It is only when you feel you have fit in somewhere, that this incessant feeling seems to subside. So without family, friends, peers, colleagues, roommates, romantic relationships, who are you?

The 5-step Cog Manual

Most people become cogs in the greater economic machine. Chances are you are on the same path, but might not be 100 % sure. Just to clarify, here are some things you ought to be doing if you want to fit in for the rest of your life:

Step 1: Embrace Permanence

If it's not fine, life is already hard enough as it is. No need for people with “new ideas” to screw up the scenery. We have gotten so far as a species by sticking to the basics, why change it? So most importantly: Fear change. Like a real cog in any big machine, it only works if nothing changes.

Step 2: Stay in one place

Science forbid you actually get introduced to other ways of thinking or, even worse, living. Your home is your palace and your comfort zone, so whatever the reason: Do NOT travel. What happens outside it does not matter. Checking out the evening news is also not a good idea. It will only expand your mind and if you are not traveling physically, why travel mentally? Taking any cog out of the machine, might just break the system. Which bring us to the next point:

Step 3: Do not think outside the box

If everyone says it, it must be right. That's why they have the audience option in Weekend Millionaires. Because the odds of many people saying something that is right, is statistically proven. Wasn't the world flat at some point in time? Or pluto a planet? You don't decide this, so listen to authority and sustain the system.

Step 4: Join the cultural cults

The ALS ice bucket challenge, Gangnam style, that black/blue or white/gold dress, these are the important things in life. Don't do something because YOU believe it is a good cause, or YOU think it is funny, do it because everyone else does. Drift through hypes. You are in control of what you like and no one can tell you not to like what everyone else likes. Including the job you have, just like everyone else.

Step 5: Accept money as the answer to everything

The banking or oil industry are the usual go-to jobs for beta students to earn money at. Alternatives for those interested in (human) biology are dentistry and medicine. People interested in statistics and social settings can go into politics or become a lawyers. It is not a coincidence that everyone, specially your parents, think these are good jobs. What is it you ask at school reunions: 'Who is that with the Ferrari?' Without values, money is your friend.

Follow these guidelines and your life as a cog can begin as soon as tomorrow!
