Update: local protest on campus
After the cancellation of the Utrecht protest, Twente for Protest chose to hold a local demonstration on campus. That will take place Thursday afternoon on the O&O square, between 13:00 and 15:00. Meanwhile, people are still going to Utrecht, where some student unions managed to set up a demonstration last-minute.
According to the NOS , the security triangle of Utrecht has received 'concrete information from outside the city', 'which shows that a pro-Palestine organization intends to hijack the demonstration'. In a letter from mayor Sharon Dijksma to the city council, it would also be stated 'that violence is not shunned'.
Trade unions AOb and FNV call it 'terrible that all those students, teachers and staff who wanted to take action tomorrow cannot now make their voices heard'.
LSVb chairman Abdelkader Karbache is also very disappointed, but there were not many alternatives. 'The municipality would have banned the demonstration anyway.'
Mayor Dijksma regrets that the demonstration cannot take place tomorrow. 'I am very concerned that at a time when it is of great value to be able to express your opinion, there are people who deprive others of this freedom under the threat of violence.'
