Open Plan

Student columnist Niels ter Meer wants to do work, but that’s hard to do on campus sometimes. And no, he doesn’t think it’s his responsibility to buy noise-cancelling headphones to deal with all the distractions that come with open plan — he wants something better.

UT community, can you please help the earthquake victims?

‘As a UT member of Turkish origin, I am asking for solidarity and attention from the UT family to help the region and the earthquake victims. I am also asking for empathy and support for the UT staff and students from the affected region,’ writes Canan Acar (Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Engineering Technology) in this opinion piece.

Playing in times of crisis

Is life a game? Or is it deadly serious? Take, for example, student pranks that are sometimes dismissed as being frivolous or even inappropriate in our time of all sorts of crises. Think of students walking around with a big wooden mallet slung over their shoulder for days during the introduction. Or with a pink tutu over their trousers. The artwork The Head suddenly wearing a tie. Or practical jokes by colleagues.

Spelen in crisistijd

Op-ed: Ties, booze, and board positions - a nuanced look

In this op-ed, former S.A. Atlantis board members Milan Gomes and Fridtjof Otto respond to the earlier column by Niels ter Meer and the op-ed by Pieter Worm. ‘We should take this discussion to a solution-oriented table, and have it result in a culture where more students feel inspired to apply for board positions.’

Op-ed: ‘A board year is an act of selflessness’

In response to the Wednesday’s column written by Niels ter Meer, Pieter Worm, Industrial Design Engineering student and board member of S.G. Daedalus, wrote this op-ed. Worm argues that a board year is an act of selflessness and are in no way unwelcoming environments. ‘Labelling board members as egotistical people who live in their own little is detrimental to the image of associations.’

New year’s wishes

New year, new you, new board — as it has always been, with all its weird traditions. Traditions which may not be so welcoming to those whom we might want to have running our associations, thinks student columnist Niels ter Meer.

Redactioneel commentaar | Het is goed dat de collegevoorzitter en decanen in de bres springen voor internationale studenten, zeker wanneer het sentiment in de discussie komt te liggen op het 'buitenlands zijn' van deze groep.

Working Vacation

Vacations are a time to relax; to forget about studying for a while so you get back fresh. Getting that to work, however, is still a bit of a work-in-progress, thinks student columnist Niels ter Meer.
