Running for condors, pandas and gorillas

The ITC team participating in the Batavierenrace on the 25th of April is supporting the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). For every stage they run (25 in total, over 175 kilometers), they support a different endangered animal species. The goal is to collect 1000 euros.

The idea to collect money for endangered animal species is a conscious one, says ITC lecturer and coach of the team Wan Bakx. ‘Since we’ve linked an animal to every stage, students don’t only run, but also run for an animal they care about. A Chilean student wanted to run for the condor right away, because that bird is on the coat of arms of Chile.’

Giant panda

The team chose for animals on the IUCN red list. From that list they selected 25 animals the students feel a connection to, Bakx explains. Besides the condor, the ITC team also runs for the mountain gorilla, the chimpanzee, the leopard and, for the closing stage, the giant panda. The quicker animals (like the Iberian Lynx) are linked to the longer stages, while the night stages are meant for the nocturnal animals, like the Sunda Pangolin.
