Possible cancellation of 53rd Batavierenrace

If no students are found for the organizing committee of the Batavierenrace before October 1, the relay race will not take place in 2025. The foundation board of the Bata is sounding the alarm about this.

'In any case, without new registrations, we will not be able to continue in the traditional form. We want to take a gap year to think about the future,' says Chantal Hilgeholt on behalf of the foundation board. 'The race may take place in a different form, but how and what is unclear at the moment. Maybe we can organise something with a smaller committee.'

Functions

Time is running out and important positions within the organization are still open. 'It's difficult to name the number of students we need. Two part-timers or full-timers are not enough. It depends on the number of people who report and the hours they can work,' says Hilgeholt. Several committee members are still being sought, including a chairman, secretary and treasurer, who can contribute to the organization several days a week.

The reason

The increasing study pressure and the possible 'long-term fine' mean that students are more reluctant to take on a board year, according to the foundation board. As a result, there would be too few registrations for the organizing committee this year, which is located partly in Enschede and partly in Nijmegen. Only half of the required positions have been provisionally occupied, while stricter rules regarding safety and sustainability are creating additional challenges for the organization. The board therefore considers it irresponsible to 'enter the race' with too small a staff.

For more than fifty years, more than 8500 students have been running from Nijmegen to Enschede in 25 relay stages, setting the record for the 'largest relay race in the world'. This event, which is set up entirely by students, is now facing a decisive moment. 'The way the flag is now, it's not going to happen. I'm staying positive, but it's going to be exciting', Hilgeholt said.
