Opleidingen accrediteren? Laat dat maar aan onszelf over, zeggen vooral de universiteiten. Ze krijgen steun uit onverwachte hoek: voorzitter Anne Flierman van kwaliteitsbewaker NVAO ziet er wel iets in. Maar er is ook veel weerstand.

‘In je eentje is het zwaar, daarom lopen we samen’

Burn-outs, concentratieproblemen en angstaanvallen: steeds meer studenten kampen met psychische problemen. Om aan deze gevoelens te ontsnappen, gaat een groepje UT-studenten twee keer per week samen hardlopen. ‘De dag begint goed na een uurtje sporten.’

‘My main goal is being useful while satisfying my curiosity,’ says Armagan Kocer (49), newly appointed professor of Bioelectric Signaling and Engineering at the UT. In her inaugural lecture today, she’ll talk of her scientific missions, one of which is stopping cancer metastases.

‘It’s like it was meant to be’

They met in class in 2007, when they were both students at the UT. They fell in love, stayed together and graduated in the same week. Now married, Anne Steins (32) and Lex van Loon (31) are about to move to the Australian National University, where they will do research on space medicine and help to implement the field they both studied - Technical Medicine.

Nienke Boersma begon in oktober als lid van de Raad van Toezicht. De directeur Reporting bij Achmea is geen onbekende op de campus. Ze studeerde technische natuurkunde en is lid van het Ambassadeursnetwerk. ‘Ik hoop waarde toe te voegen aan de UT.’

Hinke Mulder (53) is strategisch PR-manager en werkt aan de profilering van onderwijs, onderzoek en ondernemerschap. Ze is alleenstaand moeder en woonde in Suriname. Onafhankelijkheid is haar grootste goed, maar dat moet wel ingegeven zijn door het hart.

Met een nieuwe visie gaat de UT de toekomst in, op weg naar 2030. Het credo voor de komende jaren luidt People first, zowel in onderwijs als in onderzoek. De ambities zijn groot, de lat ligt hoog. U-Today vroeg vier prominente wetenschappers wat de UT nodig heeft om de komende jaren te kunnen excelleren. Hoogleraren Albert van den Berg, Peter Paul Verbeek, Suzanne Hulscher en Wiendelt Steenbergen over mooie kansen voor de toekomst.

‘I see a slide, I want to go there!’

Two UT alumni and a student of Creative Technology developed a virtual playground for sick children. The virtual-reality goggles are used for the first time at the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital in Utrecht. ‘The children believe they are in a completely different world.’

‘Het is belangrijk om je roeping te vinden’

Pim Fij (57) is directeur Campus & Facility Management en werkt 32 jaar op de UT. Eén keer keek hij buiten de campus, maar dat was een vergissing. Hij heeft zijn vroeg overleden vader nooit gekend en hem niet gemist. Wel wil hij de best mogelijke vaderfiguur zijn, als manager, familieman en voor zijn volwassen kinderen.

‘As scientists, we are too divorced from our societies’

‘I hope this will be interesting enough for you, because I have a rather unusual story.’ She does indeed. Connie Nshemereirwe (45) is a scientist through and through, but this UT alumna is not following the traditional path of a researcher. She has stepped out of academia in order to have more impact on society. Now, self-employed and independent, the Ugandan actively creates a bridge between science and policy - as a trainer, writer, speaker and as the co-chair of the Global Young Academy.
