Reliable detection of microplastics in water

Microplastics pose an increasing threat to human health and the environment. The absence of a reliable detection methods is an obstacle for legislation and restriction of these new contaminants. Associate Professor Alvaro Marin, Chair of Physics of Fluids, and his team are developing an efficient detection technology for microplastics in water. This is a first step towards better microplastic management.

Devaraj van der Meer, Professor in Physics of Fluids at the UT’s Science & Technology faculty, has been elected as fellow of the American Physical Society. He is the eighth UT researcher receiving this prestigious fellowship.

‘Small, infectious droplets can persist in air for over an hour’

FFP2 face masks, ventilation and air filters. According to Detlef Lohse, UT professor and an expert in fluid dynamics, these are presently the most important extra ingredients to prevent the coronavirus from spreading indoors. ‘Since the majority of infections is airborne, namely via aerosols.’

Onderzoekers van de vakgroep Physics of Fluids hebben een nieuwe verschijning van het bekende Leidenfrost-effect ontdekt. In het onderzoek laten ze zien hoe een druppel op vloeibare stikstof zich tientallen minuten voortbeweegt in de vorm van een ster.

Xiaojue Zhu wins the Overijssel PhD Award

Xiaojue Zhu became the most recent winner of the Overijssel PhD Award. The UT graduate conducted his PhD research at the Physics of Fluids Group and won the prize thanks to his thesis titled ‘Taylor-Couette and Rayleigh-Bénard turbulence: the role of the boundaries’. Zhu received the award during the Dies Natalis ceremony in the Waaier today.

Detlef Lohse krijgt Balzan Prize

Detlef Lohse, UT-hoogleraar Physics of Fluids én universiteitshoogleraar, heeft de prestigieuze Balzan Prize 2018 toegekend gekregen. Hij krijgt de prijs, waaraan een geldbedrag van 670.000 euro is verbonden, voor zijn onderzoek naar vloeistofdynamica. Dat maakte de Italiaans-Zwitserse Balzan Foundation gisteren in Milaan bekend.
