In memoriam: Harry Aarts

Harry Aarts, docent wiskunde, was geliefd bij UT-studenten én zijn collega’s bij de vakgroep Discrete Wiskunde en Mathematisch Programmeren. Zijn studenten beloonden hem verschillende keren met onderwijsprijzen, zijn collega’s noemen hem betrokken, een teamspeler en gepassioneerd. Hij overleed op zondag 9 augustus op 59-jarige leeftijd aan kanker.

‘It is not about me, it’s about us’

This is a year like no other for Tom Veldkamp (57). Instead of a planned sabbatical trip around the world, the professor is now preparing to become the next rector of the University of Twente. Did the boy collecting fossils in Limburg imagine that life would turn out this way? ‘This wasn’t a long-term ambition, but overall I can say: I’m living the dream.’

Tom Veldkamp is vanaf november de nieuwe rector van de UT. Als voormalig decaan van de faculteit ITC is hij voor veel medewerkers en studenten geen onbekende, maar wat voor boegbeeld haalt de UT met Veldkamp in huis? The Business Administration alumnus has been paving the road to success with his sustainable and environmentally friendly soap since 2015. These days, the company earns four million euros in revenue. Being a true family man, he was inspired by his three daughters to make his part of the world a bit better.

‘Iets goeds doen voor de wereld’

Marcel Belt (56) noemt zich Chief Soap Officer bij zijn bedrijf The Green Soap Company. De alumnus bedrijfskunde timmert sinds 2015 aan de weg met zijn duurzame en groene zeep. Inmiddels heeft het bedrijf een omzet van vier miljoen euro. Als echte familieman inspireerden zijn drie dochters hem om zijn stukje van de wereld een beetje beter te maken.

Tanya Bondarouk (52) is hoogleraar Human Resources Management, met focus op technologie en innovatie. Ze hecht aan haar vrijheid en kan daar geen betere plek voor bedenken dan Twente. De van oorsprong Sint-Petersburgse gooide vanwege uiteenlopende interesses een aantal keer het roer om.

De invloed van de coronacrisis is enorm. Ook op de UT. Volgens rector Thom Palstra staat de universiteit op een tweesprong. ‘We krijgen een enorme kans om de universiteit een duw in de juiste richting te geven.’

Universiteitshoogleraar Detlef Lohse is wereldwijd erkend expert vloeistofdynamica. Hij won de internationale Batchelorprijs, de Max Planck Medaille, de APS Fluid Dynamics Prize en de Balzanprijs. Nationaal werd hij gelauwerd met de Spinozaprijs en het Simon Stevinmeesterschap. Zijn wetenschappelijke vertrekpunten zijn creativiteit, nieuwsgierigheid en integriteit, maar hij maakt hij zich zorgen over het instortende Verlichtingsideaal.

University professor Detlef Lohse is a globally renowned expert in fluid dynamics. He won the international Batchelor Prize, the Max Planck Medal, the APS Fluid Dynamics Prize and the Balzan Prize. In his own country, he was honoured with the Spinoza Prize and the Simon Stevin Master Prize. His core scientific principles are creativity, curiosity and integrity, but he is concerned about the collapse of the Enlightenment ideal.

UT-alumnus Danny de Vries (46) werd twintig jaar geleden, op 13 mei 2000, wereldberoemd toen hij als eerste de beelden filmde van de vuurwerkramp in Enschede. Over hoe hij die ramp beleefde, maar ook over de wereld waarin we nu leven schreef hij het boek ‘Brief aan Marcel’.

Justine Blanford is the first professor with a focus on education at the University of Twente, a new position that she started on the 1st of April. ‘Finding the balance between research and teaching is very difficult, so I’m excited to help and make this happen.’
